  • In the US, Payscale puts the average base salary of an email marketing specialist at $60,410 (June 2026), about $86,390 once benefits and payroll costs are added at the BLS ratio of 1.43.
  • Freelance email marketers on Upwork list a median of $25 an hour, most between $15 and $40, plus a 5% client marketplace fee.
  • Email marketing agencies average $100 to $149 an hour on Clutch, so a $3,000 retainer buys about 20 to 30 hours of work a month.
  • Of 14 searches with email in the job title in Virtustant's data, 8 were cold outbound prospecting, including 4 of the 8 titled email marketing specialist, and only 3 were lifecycle work on the company's own list. Name the job before you compare prices.
  • 6 of the 11 searches with a stated schedule were part-time, and all 14 required C1 English or higher.
  • Through Virtustant, a dedicated email marketer starts at $7/hr all-in with zero placement fees, which can save up to 70% against a comparable US in-house hire once payroll, benefits and overhead are counted.

Key Takeaways

Hiring an email marketer in 2026 costs anywhere from $7 an hour to more than $100 an hour, and the bigger variable is which email job you are hiring for. In the US, Payscale puts the average base salary of an email marketing specialist at $60,410 (June 2026). Freelancers on Upwork list a median of $25 an hour. Email marketing agencies average $100 to $149 an hour on Clutch. A dedicated email marketer through Virtustant starts at $7 an hour all-in.

The finding that changes the budget comes from our own recruitment data. Of 14 searches with email in the job title, 8 were cold outbound prospecting, the work of a lead generation specialist or SDR, and only 3 were lifecycle work on the company's own list. Even among the 8 titled plainly email marketing specialist, 4 were outbound. Most cost guides price only the lifecycle job.

Every Virtustant figure on this page comes from first-party recruitment data read on 1 October 2026 and described under Method. Where a figure is not ours, it is the one the source publishes, with its date.

What an Email Marketer Costs, by Hiring Route

There are four honest answers, because each route prices something different. A salary buys a person and leaves the overhead to you. A marketplace rate buys hours. An agency retainer buys a scope of output from a team. A remote staffing agency rate buys a dedicated person with the overhead already inside the number.

RouteWhat you payWhat the price coversFits when
US in-house hire$60,410 average base salary for an email marketing specialist, $81,013 for an email marketing manager (Payscale, 2026); $78,760 median for the wider marketing specialists occupation (BLS, May 2025)Wages only. Benefits, payroll taxes, tools and recruiting come on topYou need someone in the office or the budget for a senior lead
Freelance marketplace$25/hr median, most between $15 and $40 (Upwork), plus a 5% client marketplace fee on the Basic plan (Upwork pricing)Billed hours. Vetting, management and continuity are on youA contained project: one flow, a template set, a list cleanup
Email marketing agency$100 to $149/hr on average; packages from $200 to nearly $10,000 a month (Clutch, updated September 2026)Strategy, design, copy and production from a team, inside a scopeYou want a finished program and can fund 20 to 30 agency hours a month
Remote staffing agency (Virtustant)From $7/hr all-in, zero placement fees, month to monthOne dedicated email marketer on your schedule, with sourcing, vetting, contract, payroll, compliance and a lifetime replacement guarantee with no time capEmail is a weekly channel and you want one person who owns it

Against a comparable US in-house hire, once payroll, benefits and overhead are counted, a managed remote placement can save up to 70%. The exact rate for an email marketer depends on the job, the tools and the seniority, so Virtustant scopes it on the discovery call rather than publishing one number for every marketing role. Fixed-price gigs are cheaper still on paper: Fiverr lists typical fixed prices of $24.67 for an email template and $167.80 for email copywriting, which price a deliverable, not a channel.

Two Different Jobs Share the Same Title

"Email marketer" names two jobs that use the same inbox and almost nothing else. One grows revenue from people who already gave you their address. The other starts conversations with people who never did. They need different skills, different tools and different budgets.

The quickest way to tell which one you need: if the goal is repeat purchases or retention, you are hiring a lifecycle email marketer. If the goal is meetings on a salesperson's calendar, you are hiring outbound, and the right benchmark is an SDR, not an email agency. Our remote SDR cost guide covers that side, and appointment setter vs SDR covers where cold email ends and qualification begins.

What 14 Real Searches Asked For

Cost guides rarely say what companies were actually trying to hire. Clients describe the job when they open a search with us, so that is what we can report.

Original data: 14 email marketing searches in Virtustant's recruitment system. Searches with email in the job title, after removing one inbox management role that was not marketing. Cold outbound prospecting: 8. Lifecycle or retention work on the company's own list: 3. Mixed cold and warm campaigns: 1. Not enough detail to classify: 2. Of the 8 titled email marketing specialist or similar, outbound: 4. Searches that ended in a placement: 9. Searches requiring C1 English or higher: 14 of 14.

  • Outbound dominates the title. The 8 outbound searches asked for list building, personalized sequences, deliverability and booked meetings, with tools such as Apollo, Instantly, ZoomInfo and Listkit. One also asked for cold calls and demo scheduling. These are prospecting jobs that happen to run on email.
  • Lifecycle searches were store work. Both lifecycle searches that named a tool asked for Klaviyo connected to Shopify, with segmentation, A/B testing and campaign analysis. A third was titled email and retention.
  • Part-time is normal. Of the 11 searches with a stated schedule, 6 were part-time, at 15 to 20 hours a week or a fixed four-hour daily block, and 5 were full-time.
  • The English bar is high. Every search required C1 English or higher, because the work is writing that a US buyer reads. The one inbox role we removed asked for B2.

The practical read: before you compare prices, write one sentence on whose list the person will email. It decides the profile, the tools and which price list applies.

The Hours Test

Quotes for email work arrive in different units: a salary, an hourly rate, a monthly retainer, a price per email. To compare them, divide the monthly price by the hours of email work it buys.

What you buyMonthly pricePrice per hourHours of email work it buys
Agency retainer$3,000$100 to $149 (Clutch average)About 20 to 30
Freelancer, 80 hours$2,100 ($2,000 plus the 5% Upwork fee)$26.25 at the $25 median80
Freelancer, 160 hours$4,200 ($4,000 plus the 5% Upwork fee)$26.25 at the $25 median160
Dedicated part-time email marketer through Virtustant, 80 hours$560 at the starting rateFrom $7 all-in80
Dedicated full-time email marketer through Virtustant, 160 hours$1,120 at the starting rateFrom $7 all-in160

The test does not say agencies are poor value. A retainer buys a team, a strategy and design production that one person may not cover, and InboxArmy publishes $250 to $1,000 to craft a single email and $1,000 to $5,000 to set up a three-email automation. What the test shows is the trade: a retainer buys expertise in fewer hours, and a dedicated email marketer buys continuity, someone inside your store, CRM and calendar every week. If the program already exists and needs running, hours matter more than strategy.

What a US Email Marketer Really Costs

A salary is not the cost of a seat. The BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation release for June 2026 puts private industry total compensation at $46.89 per hour worked, of which wages are $32.82, a ratio of 1.43 (BLS, published 9 September 2026). Applied to the published pay for this role:

US benchmarkPublished payLoaded at 1.43Per hour, loaded, at 2,080 hours
Email marketing specialist (Payscale, June 2026)$60,410 average baseAbout $86,390About $41.53
Marketing specialists, the federal occupation (BLS, May 2025)$78,760 medianAbout $112,630About $54.15
Email marketing manager (Payscale, March 2026)$81,013 average baseAbout $115,850About $55.70

Two cautions. The 1.43 ratio is an average across private industry, not a figure specific to marketing. And the pay sources do not agree, because none of them measures the same job: there is no federal occupation called email marketer, so the BLS figure covers all marketing specialists, while ZipRecruiter puts US pay for email marketing at $50,955 a year, or $24.50 an hour (August 2026). The email marketing manager figure is the one to use if you need someone to set the strategy, not just run it.

The Tools You Pay For on Top

On every route, the platform is your bill. Lifecycle and outbound run on different software, which is one more reason to name the job first.

ToolPublished priceUsed for
KlaviyoFree up to 250 active profiles and 500 email sends a month; email plan from $20 a month for 251 to 500 active profiles, rising with list sizeLifecycle flows and campaigns
Instantly$47 a month (Growth, 5,000 emails) or $97 a month (Hypergrowth, 125,000 emails), monthly billingCold email sequences

Outbound also needs a data source for contacts and, usually, separate sending domains to protect your main domain's reputation. Ask any candidate how they warm up a new domain before sending; it is the fastest way to tell an outbound specialist from someone who has only sent newsletters.

How to Budget for an Email Marketer

  1. Name the job. Lifecycle on your own list, or outbound to prospects. It decides the profile, the tools and the price list.
  2. Decide who sets the strategy. If nobody on your side owns it, budget for a manager-level hire or an agency to build the program, then a dedicated person to run it.
  3. Set the hours. One store's flows and weekly campaigns often fit 20 hours a week. Outbound at volume, or email combined with social and design, usually needs a full-time seat.
  4. Add the tools. Price your email platform at your current list size, or your sequencer and data source for outbound.
  5. Run the hours test. Divide each quote by the hours of email work it buys, then judge what those hours include.
  6. Test with your real work. Ask for one flow or one sequence for your actual product, and review the copy, the segmentation and the reasoning behind it.

Virtustant places vetted email marketers from Latin America, with a first shortlist of 3 to 5 candidates within 48 hours and a start in 72 hours (see time to hire). Candidates come from roughly the top 1% of applicants through a four-stage vetting funnel: 100% apply, 22% clear the recruiter screen, 9% pass skills and English testing, 3% reach a live interview, 1% are hired. If the job is wider than email, what a digital marketer costs and what a social media manager costs cover the neighboring roles. Book a discovery call to scope the role and leave with a rate and a timeline whether or not you hire.

FAQ: Email Marketer Cost

How much does it cost to hire an email marketer in 2026?

It depends on the route. In the US, Payscale puts the average base salary of an email marketing specialist at $60,410 a year (June 2026), or about $86,390 once benefits and payroll costs are added at the BLS ratio of 1.43. Freelance email marketers on Upwork list a median of $25 an hour, most between $15 and $40, plus a 5% client marketplace fee. Clutch puts the average email marketing agency at $100 to $149 an hour, with retainers from $200 to nearly $10,000 a month. Through Virtustant, a dedicated email marketer starts at $7 an hour all-in, and the rate for the role is scoped on the discovery call.

What is the hourly rate for an email marketer?

Freelancers on Upwork list a median of $25 an hour, with most rates between $15 and $40. ZipRecruiter puts the average US pay for email marketing at $24.50 an hour (August 2026). Clutch puts the average email marketing agency at $100 to $149 an hour. A dedicated remote email marketer through Virtustant starts at $7 an hour all-in, covering payroll, compliance and a lifetime replacement guarantee.

How much does an email marketing agency charge per month?

Clutch, which reviews agency projects, reports monthly packages from $200 to nearly $10,000 and an average hourly rate of $100 to $149. InboxArmy, an email agency, publishes retainers of $1,000 to $3,000 a month for smaller businesses and $3,000 to $10,000 or more for larger ones. At Clutch's average hourly rate, a $3,000 retainer buys about 20 to 30 hours of work a month.

What is the difference between a lifecycle email marketer and a cold email specialist?

A lifecycle email marketer works your own list: welcome, abandoned cart and win-back flows, campaigns, segmentation and reporting, usually in a platform such as Klaviyo. A cold email specialist works lists of prospects who never opted in: building and verifying lists, writing sequences, protecting deliverability and booking meetings, with tools such as Apollo, Instantly or ZoomInfo. In Virtustant's data, 8 of 14 searches with email in the job title were cold outbound work, including 4 of the 8 titled email marketing specialist, and only 3 were lifecycle work.

Should I hire a freelancer, an agency or a dedicated email marketer?

Hire a freelancer for a contained project, such as building a welcome flow or a template set. Hire an agency when you want strategy, design and production from a team and can pay for 20 to 30 hours a month at agency rates. Hire a dedicated email marketer when email is a weekly channel that needs someone inside your store, CRM and calendar every week. The hours test helps: divide the monthly price by the hours of email work it buys.

How many hours a week does an email marketer need?

Of the 11 email searches in Virtustant's data with a stated schedule, 6 were part-time and 5 were full-time. The part-time searches asked for 15 to 20 hours a week or a fixed four-hour daily block. Lifecycle work for one store often fits part-time; outbound prospecting at volume, or email combined with social and design, usually needs a full-time seat.

What tools does an email marketer need, and what do they cost?

Lifecycle work runs on an email platform. Klaviyo is free up to 250 active profiles and 500 sends a month, and its email plan starts at $20 a month for 251 to 500 active profiles, rising with the size of the list. Cold outbound runs on a sequencing tool plus a data source; Instantly lists $47 a month for its Growth plan with 5,000 emails and $97 for Hypergrowth with 125,000. Tools are billed to you on every hiring route.

How fast can I hire an email marketer through Virtustant?

A first shortlist of 3 to 5 vetted candidates arrives within 48 hours of an approved job description. Your hire can start in 72 hours. There is no placement fee, the agreement is month to month, and replacement is guaranteed for the life of the placement.

Method and Sources

The dataset. 15 searches with email in the job title in Virtustant's recruitment system, recorded between 2025 and September 2026, read on 1 October 2026. One was removed because it was an inbox management and receptionist role, not marketing, leaving 14. Each search was classified from its job description, or from its title where the description was missing or could not be matched to the search: outbound when the work was prospecting to lists that had not opted in, lifecycle when it was flows and campaigns to the company's own subscribers. Hours were read from the stated schedule. The set covers hired (9), open, waiting for interview, declined and ghosted searches.

What this is not. A sample of 14 is small and the split is indicative. We do not publish a budget figure for this role: the budget field is filled on only 4 of the 14 searches and not on a consistent hours basis.
