Key Takeaways

Content writing services are outside writers and platforms that produce blog posts, web pages, articles, emails and other marketing copy for a fee per word, per piece, per month or per hour. Published prices span four models. Per-word platforms charge from $0.04 to $1.00+ a word plus a monthly platform fee (WriterAccess) or $0.06 a word for AI-assisted and $0.16 for fully human writing (Verblio). Per-piece services start at $99 a piece, with blog posts from $110 for 300 to 500 words (ContentWriters), and managed content programs start at $2,500 a month with a 6-month minimum. Freelance content writers on Upwork list $15 to $40 an hour, copywriters $19 to $45. Through Virtustant, a dedicated remote copywriter from Latin America starts at $9 an hour all-in: about $780 a month at 20 hours a week.

This guide shows what each way of buying writing covers, the published prices side by side, a test for the word volume at which a dedicated writer costs the same as per-word pricing, a checklist for the work that happens before and after the draft, and what 14 content placements through Virtustant show about how companies actually buy writing. Third-party prices are as published, read on 28 October 2026.

What Content Writing Services Include

The draft is one step of eight. Services differ mainly in how many of the other seven they include, which is why per-word prices are hard to compare.

StepWhat it coversUsually included in per-word or per-piece pricing?
Topic planWhat to write and in what order, tied to search demand or a campaignSometimes: ContentWriters includes topic pitching with orders
Brief and keywordsTarget keyword, angle, outline, sources, word countOften yours to write; keyword research can be an add-on
Research and interviewsFacts, data, quotes from your team or customersLight research is common; interviews are usually extra
DraftThe writing itselfYes: this is what the per-word price buys
Edit and fact-checkEditing, proofreading, AI and plagiarism checks, revisionsPartly: ContentWriters includes editing and 2 revision rounds on self-service

Images and layoutFeatured images, screenshots, tablesRarely
DistributionNewsletter, social posts, repurposing into other formatsRarely: usually a separate service

Content writing or copywriting? Content writing informs: blog posts, guides, articles. Copywriting sells: landing pages, ads, emails, product pages. Many services sell both, and 2 of the 14 content placements below combined copywriting with SEO or admin work.

Five Ways to Buy Content Writing

  • Per-word platform. You post an order and a writer from the platform's pool takes it. WriterAccess charges a $49 or $79 monthly platform fee plus $0.04 to $1.00+ a word; Verblio charges $0.06 a word for AI-assisted writing (with a $49.50 monthly fee) or $0.16 a word for fully human writing.
  • Per-piece service. Fixed prices by content type and length. ContentWriters lists blog posts from $110 for 300 to 500 words and gives $250 as an example for a 1,000 to 1,500 word article.
  • Managed content program. An account manager plans, assigns and delivers on a monthly budget. ContentWriters starts at $2,500 a month with a 6-month minimum; WriterAccess managed plans start at $449 a month plus content.
  • Freelance writer. Hired directly or through a marketplace. Upwork lists content writers at $15 to $40 an hour and copywriters at $19 to $45, before Upwork's client fees.
  • Dedicated remote writer. One writer on your content every week, in your tools and your voice. Through Virtustant, copywriters from Latin America start at $9 an hour all-in.

The Per-Word Crossover

Per-word pricing is easy to buy and hard to budget. The Per-Word Crossover turns it into one number: the monthly word count at which a dedicated writer costs the same as the per-word service.

Crossover words = monthly cost of the seat ÷ price per word.

Per-word priceExampleCrossover at 20 h/week ($780)Crossover at 40 h/week ($1,560)
$0.06Verblio AI + human (before the $49.50 fee)13,000 words26,000 words
$0.16Verblio 100% human4,875 words9,750 words

How to read it. If you publish four 1,500-word posts a month (6,000 words), fully human per-word writing at $0.16 costs $960. The same $960 pays for about 107 hours of a dedicated writer at $9 an hour, roughly 25 hours a week. Whether those hours produce more than 6,000 publishable words depends on the writer and the topic, so test it with a paid trial. The second half of the math is what the per-word price leaves out: briefs, interviews, uploads and images, which the dedicated writer can take on in the same hours.

Below the crossover, buy per word. Above it, or when the steps around the draft take as long as the draft itself, a dedicated writer is usually cheaper per published piece.

The Draft-to-Publish Checklist

Before you compare a per-word quote with a writer's hourly rate, write down who will do each of these steps. Every step you keep is time your team spends on top of the writing fee.

  1. Pick the topic and the keyword or question it answers.
  2. Write the brief: angle, outline, sources, internal links, word count.
  3. Supply the expertise: an interview, a customer story or your own data, so the piece says something others cannot.
  4. Check the facts against the original source, not a summary of it.
  5. Edit for voice so it sounds like your company.
  6. Upload and format in your CMS with headings, links, meta tags and images.
  7. Publish and distribute: newsletter, social posts, sales enablement.
  8. Update the piece when prices, products or rankings change.

Per-word and per-piece prices pay for the draft and, depending on the service, some editing; the rest of this list stays with you unless the quote says otherwise. A dedicated writer can own most of it. If your site runs on WordPress, step 6 is also where a WordPress developer or a CMS-savvy writer saves time.

What 14 Content Placements Show

We looked at the 14 content and copywriting placements that US clients filled through Virtustant between October 2025 and August 2026, by job title, schedule and time zone.

What the role wasPlacements (of 14)
Pure writing roles (content writer, blog writer)4
Copywriting combined with SEO or admin work2
Content combined with SEO1
Content combined with social media management or community5
Visual or video content (video creator, head of visual content)2
Full-time6
Part-time3
US Eastern hours (Central 1, Pacific 1, flexible 1, not stated 5)6

Only 4 of 14 were writing-only roles. Most companies bought writing together with the job around it: SEO, social media, admin or video. That is the Draft-to-Publish Checklist in practice: the writing is rarely the whole job. In the three writing job posts we read in full, two asked for SEO knowledge, one asked the writer to use AI-assisted tools with light fact-checking, and one wanted ad scripts and webinar scripts rather than articles.

What a Dedicated Writer Costs

Weekly hoursMonthly hoursAt the $9 starting rate
2086.7$780
40173.3$1,560

Monthly cost is weekly hours × 52 ÷ 12 × the hourly rate, with no setup fee and no placement fee. Copywriters start at $9 an hour; content writer, SEO writer and editor rates depend on scope and experience and are confirmed on the discovery call. US writers and authors had a median wage of $36.98 an hour in May 2025 (BLS OEWS, SOC 27-3043), before payroll taxes and benefits. The $9 starting rate is below 30% of that wage alone, which is why you can save up to 70% against a comparable US hire. For comparison, ContentWriters' $2,500 managed minimum is more than the $1,560 a month of a full-time dedicated writer at the starting rate.

When a Platform or Agency Is the Right Call

  • Low or uneven volume. Below the Per-Word Crossover, paying per word is cheaper than a seat.
  • Specialist subjects. Medical, legal or deeply technical topics may need a credentialed writer for a few pieces; platforms let you pick by expertise.
  • Many formats at once. A managed program can cover white papers, case studies and press releases with different writers.
  • No one owns the content. A dedicated writer needs someone who approves topics and gives feedback. Without that person, an agency's account manager fills the gap.
  • A short burst. A launch or a site rewrite fits a project better than a hire.

How to Compare Quotes

  • Same brief for everyone. One real topic, the same word count and the same sources.
  • Price per published piece. Include platform fees, revision rounds and your own editing time, not just the per-word rate.
  • AI policy in writing. Verblio sells AI-assisted and fully human writing at different prices; ask every provider which you are buying.
  • Who writes. The same writer each time or whoever picks up the order.
  • The Draft-to-Publish Checklist. Which of the eight steps the quote covers.
  • Rights. Full ownership of the final text, with no reuse by the provider.
  • Minimums and exit. Monthly minimums, contract length and notice period.
  • A paid test. One piece from each finalist, judged against the same brief.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are content writing services?

Content writing services are outside writers and platforms that produce blog posts, web pages, articles, emails and other marketing copy for a fee per word, per piece, per month or per hour. They are sold as per-word platforms, per-piece services, managed content programs, freelance writers and dedicated remote writers.

How much do content writing services cost?

Per-word platforms charge $0.04 to $1.00+ a word plus a platform fee (WriterAccess), or $0.06 to $0.16 a word (Verblio). Per-piece services start at $99 a piece, with short blog posts from $110, and managed programs at $2,500 a month (ContentWriters). Upwork lists content writers at $15 to $40 an hour. A dedicated copywriter through Virtustant starts at $9 an hour all-in.

How much should I pay per word for content writing?

Published rates run from $0.04 to over $1.00 a word. Verblio charges $0.16 a word for fully human writing, and ContentWriters gives a range of $0.13 to $0.61+ a word. Compare the price per published piece, including platform fees, revisions and your own editing time.

Is it cheaper to hire a writer or use a content writing service?

Divide the monthly cost of a dedicated writer by the per-word price. At $9 an hour and 20 hours a week ($780 a month), the crossover is 4,875 words a month at $0.16 a word. Below that, per-word pricing is cheaper; above it, or when briefs, uploads and images take real time, a dedicated writer usually costs less per published piece.

What is the difference between content writing and copywriting?

Content writing informs and builds search traffic: blog posts, guides and articles. Copywriting persuades: landing pages, ads, emails and product pages. Many writers do both, but copywriting is usually judged on conversions and content writing on traffic and engagement.

Should content writers use AI?

Many services now sell AI-assisted writing at a lower price than fully human writing; Verblio lists $0.06 and $0.16 a word for the two. Decide what you want, put the policy in writing, and check facts against original sources either way.

How fast can I hire a dedicated writer?

You get a shortlist of 3 to 5 vetted candidates within 48 hours of your first call, and your hire can start in 72 hours.
