Key Takeaways

WordPress development services are outside developers or firms that build, change and look after WordPress sites: custom themes and plugins, WooCommerce stores, new pages, speed and security work, migrations and ongoing updates. Published prices fall into four bands. Codeable, a vetted WordPress marketplace, quotes $80 to $120 an hour plus a fixed 17.5% service fee, with projects from $420 (speed and security) to $3,200 (e-commerce builds). Freelance WordPress developers on Upwork list $15 to $28 an hour at the median. Paid maintenance plans run from $39 to $359 a month per site (GoWP, WP Buffs), and most exclude custom development. Through Virtustant, a dedicated remote WordPress developer from Latin America starts at $8 an hour all-in, with the rate scoped on the discovery call: about $693 a month at 20 hours a week.

This guide shows what each way of buying WordPress work covers, the published prices side by side, a test for sorting a month of WordPress work into what a plan, a marketplace and a dedicated developer should handle, and what 7 recent WordPress searches through Virtustant show, including how many came from agencies buying WordPress capacity for their own clients. Third-party prices are as published, read on 28 October 2026.

What WordPress Development Services Include

Most quotes are a mix of eight kinds of work. The first five are development; the last three are upkeep. Providers price them very differently, which is why two quotes for "WordPress support" can be ten times apart.

Custom themeA theme coded for your design instead of a templateProject quote; Codeable lists custom themes from $980

Five Ways to Buy WordPress Development

  • WordPress agency or dev shop. A team handles design, development and project management. Most agency pages in this search publish no prices and quote after a call.
  • Vetted WordPress marketplace. Codeable matches projects with pre-vetted WordPress developers at $80 to $120 an hour plus a 17.5% service fee, paid into escrow, with a 28-day bug-fixing warranty.
  • Freelance marketplace. Upwork lists WordPress developers at $15 to $28 an hour at the median and $15 to $40+ overall, before Upwork's own client fees (see our breakdown of Upwork fees).
  • Maintenance or care plan. A monthly fee per site for updates, backups, monitoring and a set amount of small edits. WP Buffs runs $89 to $359 a month; GoWP runs $0 to $99, with 5 human edits on its $99 plan.
  • Dedicated remote developer. One developer on your sites every week, in your hours and your tools. Through Virtustant, WordPress developers from Latin America start at $8 an hour all-in.

Toptal also places WordPress developers but publishes no rates on its Toptal WordPress page; our Toptal pricing analysis works through what its developer rates imply.

The Three-Bucket Test

Care plans, marketplaces and dedicated developers are priced for different kinds of work. Before comparing quotes, sort one normal month of your WordPress requests into three buckets.

BucketWhat goes in itCheapest fit
1. UpkeepCore, theme and plugin updates, backups, uptime and security scansA maintenance plan: from $39 a month per site
2. Small editsChanges of about 30 minutes or less: text, images, a section, a form fieldA plan with edits, if the count stays under the cap (GoWP: 5 a month on $99)
3. Build workNew pages and templates, custom theme or plugin code, WooCommerce changes, integrationsHourly or project work, or a dedicated developer once the hours repeat

How to read it. If almost everything lands in bucket 1, buy a plan. If bucket 2 regularly overflows the plan's edit cap, or bucket 3 shows up every month, you are buying development, not maintenance, and plans exclude most of it: WP Buffs bills custom development hourly even on its unlimited-edit tiers.

Where a dedicated developer pays. A part-time dedicated developer at the $8 starting rate costs about $693 a month for 20 hours a week. At Codeable's published rates, including the 17.5% fee ($94 to $141 an hour), the same $693 buys 4.9 to 7.4 hours. At Upwork's median range it buys 24.8 to 46.2 hours, before client fees. So if your bucket 3 work runs past about 7.4 marketplace hours every month, a dedicated seat is usually the cheaper way to buy it, and it comes with someone who already knows your site. If the work is a single project, a marketplace or agency quote is the better fit.

The test is about recurring hours, not hourly rates. A $94 hour that you need twice a year is cheaper than a seat you do not use.

The Keys Checklist

Whoever does the work, your business should own the accounts. Before any provider starts, confirm these six are in your company's name, with the developer on their own login:

  1. Domain and DNS. Registrar account in your name, not the agency's.
  2. Hosting. Billing and the main hosting login stay with you; the developer gets a user account.
  3. WordPress admin. At least one administrator account you control; each developer on a named account you can remove.
  4. Premium theme and plugin licenses. Bought or transferred to your company, so updates keep working after a handover.
  5. Code and staging. Custom code in a repository you own, and a staging site for changes before they go live.
  6. Backups. A copy stored outside the provider's own systems, so leaving a plan does not mean losing your restore points.

What 7 WordPress Searches Show

We read the job posts behind the 7 searches for WordPress roles that US clients opened through Virtustant between October 2025 and August 2026. The counts describe what clients wrote into the role, not results.

What the job post saidSearches (of 7)
Building new pages or sites6
Maintaining or managing an existing site5
Mainly maintenance and updates rather than new builds3
SEO or site speed5
Security or backups3
PHP required3
A page builder named (Elementor or WPBakery)1
WooCommerce named1
Client was an agency or web-services firm buying WordPress capacity for its own clients4
Part-time5
Full-time2
US Eastern hours (Central 1, Pacific 1, not stated 2)3

Three things stand out. Most clients wanted one person for both build work and upkeep, which no maintenance plan covers on its own. Four of the seven were agencies or web shops adding a developer behind their own client work, the same pattern we saw in social media hiring. And five of seven started part-time: a WordPress seat often begins at 20 hours a week and grows. One client was explicit that the role was "not for a full software developer", only mid-level WordPress work; writing that line into the brief saves both sides time. Four of the seven searches ended in a hire.

What a Dedicated WordPress Developer Costs

Weekly hoursMonthly hoursAt the $8 starting rate
2086.7$693
40173.3$1,387

Monthly cost is weekly hours × 52 ÷ 12 × the hourly rate, with no setup fee and no placement fee. WordPress developers start at $8 an hour; the final rate depends on seniority, stack (PHP, WooCommerce, custom plugins) and schedule, and is scoped on the discovery call. Virtustant publishes no median for developers. For comparison, US web developers had a median wage of $44.54 an hour in May 2025 (BLS OEWS, SOC 15-1254), before payroll taxes and benefits. The $8 starting rate is below 30% of that wage alone, which is why you can save up to 70% against a comparable US hire.

When an Agency or Marketplace Is the Right Call

  • One big project, then quiet. A redesign or new store with little work afterwards fits a fixed project quote better than a seat.
  • You need design, strategy and development at once. An agency brings a designer, a developer and a project manager under one contract.
  • Specialist work. Complex WooCommerce, performance audits or custom plugin architecture may call for a senior specialist for a few weeks; a vetted marketplace is built for that.
  • Only upkeep. If the Three-Bucket Test puts everything in bucket 1, a maintenance plan is the cheapest answer.
  • No one can direct the work. A dedicated developer needs someone who sets priorities each week. Without that person, an agency's project manager fills the gap.

How to Compare Quotes

  • Same list of requests for everyone. Give each provider last month's actual requests, sorted with the Three-Bucket Test.
  • What counts as an edit. Plans define edits by time (GoWP: about 30 minutes); ask what happens to the 31st minute.
  • What is excluded. Custom code, content creation and new builds are often outside "unlimited" plans.
  • Who does the work. A named developer or a rotating queue, and how many other sites they handle.
  • Response time and hours. When a broken checkout gets fixed in your customers' time zone.
  • Fees on top. Marketplace service fees and payment fees change the real hourly rate.
  • The Keys Checklist. Domain, hosting, admin, licenses, code and backups in your name.
  • A paid test. One real ticket from your backlog, scoped the same way for each finalist.

Hiring a WordPress Developer Through Virtustant

Virtustant is a remote staffing agency that places vetted WordPress developers, web developers and designers from Latin America with US companies, working your hours inside your hosting, repository and project tools. WordPress developers start at $8/hr all-in, with the rate scoped on the discovery call. You get a shortlist of 3 to 5 vetted candidates within 48 hours of your first call, and your hire can start in 72 hours. The vetting funnel: 100% apply, 22% clear the recruiter screen, 9% pass cognitive (IQ), skills and English testing, 3% reach a live interview, 1% are hired, which is what we mean by the top 1%.

After the hire, your account manager is the main point of contact and coordinates onboarding, the start date, tools access and a first-week plan. You direct the day-to-day work. Virtustant handles payroll, paperwork and everything administrative on the professional's side. Terms are month-to-month with zero placement fees, a lifetime replacement guarantee and one weekly invoice per placement. How Virtustant makes money: if you pay your agent $10/hr, we give them $9 and keep the dollar in the middle.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are WordPress development services?

WordPress development services are outside developers or firms that build, change and maintain WordPress sites: custom themes and plugins, WooCommerce stores, new pages, speed and security work, migrations and ongoing updates. They are sold by agencies, vetted marketplaces, freelance platforms, maintenance plans and as dedicated remote developers.

How much do WordPress development services cost?

Codeable publishes $80 to $120 an hour plus a 17.5% service fee, with projects from $420 to $3,200. Freelance WordPress developers on Upwork list $15 to $28 an hour at the median. Paid maintenance plans run $39 to $359 a month per site at GoWP and WP Buffs. A dedicated WordPress developer through Virtustant starts at $8 an hour all-in, about $693 a month at 20 hours a week.

What is the difference between WordPress development and WordPress maintenance?

Maintenance keeps an existing site running: updates, backups, monitoring, security scans and small edits. Development changes what the site does: new pages and templates, custom themes and plugins, WooCommerce work and integrations. Maintenance plans usually exclude custom development and bill it hourly.

Is a WordPress maintenance plan enough?

Only if your monthly requests are mostly updates and a few small edits. Sort one month of requests into upkeep, small edits and build work. If small edits overflow the plan's cap or build work appears every month, you need development hours on top of the plan.

Should I hire a WordPress developer or an agency?

Use an agency or marketplace for a one-off project or specialist work, and a dedicated developer when build work repeats every month. At Codeable's published rates including fees, $693 buys about 4.9 to 7.4 hours; the same amount pays for 20 hours a week of a dedicated developer through Virtustant at the $8 starting rate.

Who should own the domain, hosting and admin accounts?

Your business. Keep the domain registrar, hosting billing, an administrator account, premium licenses, the code repository and an independent backup in your company's name, and give each developer a named login you can remove.

How fast can I hire a dedicated WordPress developer?

You get a shortlist of 3 to 5 vetted candidates within 48 hours of your first call, and your hire can start in 72 hours.

Published prices. Read on 28 October 2026 on each provider's own page: Codeable pricing page (hourly range, 17.5% service fee, starting prices, 28-day warranty); Upwork WordPress developer cost page (median and overall hourly ranges); WP Buffs pricing (four monthly tiers; custom development excluded from unlimited edits); GoWP pricing (three monthly tiers; a human edit is defined as about 30 minutes); Toptal WordPress page (no rates published). Figures are reported as published; prices and terms change, so confirm them in writing.

Calculations. Codeable with fee: $80 × 1.175 = $94; $120 × 1.175 = $141. Hours bought: $693 ÷ $141 = 4.9; ÷ $94 = 7.4; ÷ $28 = 24.8; ÷ $15 = 46.2. Dedicated cost: weekly hours × 52 ÷ 12 × $8. BLS: 30% of $44.54 = $13.36, above the $8 starting rate.
