Toptal Pricing in 2026: What Toptal Publishes, What a Quote Costs per Month and the Rate Where It Matches a US Hire

Toptal charges clients a flat $79 monthly subscription once they proceed with talent matching, and bills the talent itself at an hourly, part-time or full-time rate that it quotes per engagement and does not publish. Every engagement starts with a trial of up to two weeks, and you are not billed if you are not satisfied. Because the rate is the whole bill, the subscription is under 1% of a full-time engagement at $50 an hour or more. This guide sets out exactly what Toptal publishes (read on its FAQ and Why Toptal pages on October 23, 2026), what a quote turns into per month, and the hourly rate at which Toptal costs as much as a fully loaded US hire.
Virtustant is a remote staffing agency and one of the routes compared below, so we stick to published facts and show every calculation. If you are still choosing between models rather than pricing Toptal, start with our guide to Toptal alternatives.
Toptal publishes the terms around the rate, not the rate. Here is everything its own pages say about cost, quoted as of October 23, 2026:
| Item | What Toptal says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Subscription | A flat monthly subscription fee of $79, charged if you decide to proceed with talent matching. You can cancel at any time, and if Toptal cannot provide talent you can request a refund on cancellation. | FAQ |
| Talent rate | You work with talent hourly, part-time or full-time, for a fixed price on a weekly basis. The rate is not listed on the FAQ or the Why Toptal page. | Why Toptal |
| Recruiting fee | $0, against what the page calls typical employment recruiting costs. | Why Toptal |
| Termination costs | None. | Why Toptal |
| Trial | Each engagement starts with a trial period of up to two weeks. If you are not completely satisfied, you will not be billed, and you can keep work completed during the trial. You can trial up to three individuals per position. | FAQ, Why Toptal |
| Speed | In almost all cases, candidates are introduced within 24 hours. | FAQ |
| Selection | Fewer than 3% of the more than 200,000 people who apply each year are accepted. | FAQ |
| Billing | Clients are typically invoiced twice a month on Net 10 terms. Major credit cards, ACH, bank wires and PayPal are accepted. If talent is unavailable, billed time is credited back. | FAQ |
| Full-time hire | Asked whether you can hire a Toptal freelancer full time, the FAQ answers "For the most part, yes," with terms arranged case by case. | FAQ |
Two things are missing from Toptal's own pages. The first is the hourly rate, which depends on the role, seniority and other factors and is quoted on a call. The second is a deposit: the FAQ does not mention one, while several third-party guides report a refundable $500 deposit credited to the first invoice. Treat the deposit as a question for your quote, not a fact.
Toptal places more than developers. Its Why Toptal page lists developers, designers, marketing experts, management consultants and finance experts, project managers, product managers and sales experts, so the same pricing structure applies across all of them.
Because Toptal does not publish rates, the table below runs five example rates through the published structure: the rate times the hours, plus the $79 subscription. These are example inputs, not Toptal quotes. Plug in your own quote the same way.
| Example rate | Per week at 40 hours | Per month, part-time (80 hours) | Per month, full-time (160 hours) | First 12 months, full-time | Subscription share of the monthly bill |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $50/hr | $2,000 | $4,079 | $8,079 | $96,948 | 0.98% |
| $75/hr | $3,000 | $6,079 | $12,079 | $144,948 | 0.65% |
| $100/hr | $4,000 | $8,079 | $16,079 | $192,948 | 0.49% |
| $125/hr | $5,000 | $10,079 | $20,079 | $240,948 | 0.39% |
| $150/hr | $6,000 | $12,079 | $24,079 | $288,948 | 0.33% |
Every monthly figure is the rate times the hours plus $79; the 12-month figure is the full-time month times 12. Three things follow from the arithmetic:
The useful question is not "what does Toptal cost?" but "at what rate does Toptal stop being cheaper than hiring in the US?" We call that number the Toptal Parity Rate: the hourly quote at which a full-time Toptal engagement costs the same per month as a fully loaded US hire in the same role.
The formula: take the BLS median annual wage, divide by 0.70 to add benefits at 30% of total compensation (the private-industry share in the BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation release for June 2026), divide by 12, subtract the $79 subscription, and divide by 160 hours.
| Role | US median wage (BLS, May 2025) | US fully loaded per month | Toptal Parity Rate | Virtustant starting rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Software developer | $135,980 | $16,188.10 | $100.68/hr | From $8/hr all-in ($1,280 a month) |
| Marketing specialist | $78,760 | $9,376.19 | $58.11/hr | From $7/hr all-in ($1,120 a month) |
| Graphic designer | $62,960 | $7,495.24 | $46.35/hr | From $8/hr all-in ($1,280 a month) |
How to read it: a full-time Toptal developer quoted below about $100 an hour costs less per month than the loaded US median, before you count the US hire's recruiting time, equipment and the cost of a bad hire. A designer quoted above about $46 an hour costs more than a loaded US median designer. Seniority moves both sides: a staff-level engineer in the US earns well above the median, and so does a senior Toptal freelancer.
The parity rate is also a negotiating tool. If a quote lands above parity for an ongoing, full-time seat, you are paying a premium for speed and flexibility, which can be worth it for a short engagement and rarely is for a permanent seat.
Before you compare a Toptal quote with anything else, get these seven lines in writing. Each one comes from a term Toptal publishes or from a gap in what it publishes.
The rule. If the quote cannot be written as one hourly number times your hours plus $79, something is missing. Ask until it can.
Toptal is one of five ways to put a developer, designer or marketer on your team. The table compares them on what each publishes, so you can see where Toptal's price sits in the market.
| Route | How you pay | Who vets | If the hire does not work | Billing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Toptal | Rate quoted per engagement, plus $79/month | Toptal, before you see profiles | Trial of up to two weeks, then a new search | Weekly fixed price; invoiced twice a month |
| Upwork | The freelancer's rate plus a client marketplace fee of up to 7.99% on Basic (3% for qualifying US bank accounts) | You | You search again | Per contract |
| Deel (contractor plan) | The pay you set, plus from $49 per contractor per month | You | You search again | Monthly, per active contract |
| US in-house hire | Median wage plus about 30% in benefits; recruiting on top | You | You search again | Payroll |
| Virtustant | All-in hourly rate: developers and designers from $8/hr, marketing from $7/hr, scoped on the discovery call | Virtustant, through a four-stage funnel | Lifetime replacement guarantee, no time cap | One weekly invoice per placement |
Upwork terms from its client marketplace fee article; Deel terms from its pricing page, both read October 23, 2026. For the full breakdown of Deel's plans, see Deel pricing in 2026. For Upwork, see Upwork alternatives and Virtustant vs Upwork.
The structural difference is where the fee sits. Toptal, Upwork and Deel add a fee or subscription to a rate you negotiate. An all-in agency rate already includes recruiting, the contract and payroll on the professional's side, so the number you are quoted is the number you pay.
A pricing guide that only recommends its author is not much use. Toptal's premium buys three things that are hard to get elsewhere:
Toptal is a weaker fit for an ongoing, full-time seat in US hours where the rate lands near or above the parity rate above. That is the case where a remote staffing agency usually costs less, and it is the case we see most: in 44 developer and technical placements Virtustant made between October 2025 and September 2026, 30 were full time and 33 of the 34 job posts that stated hours named a US time zone. The full dataset is in our Toptal alternatives guide.
If the seat is ongoing, Virtustant places a dedicated remote professional from Latin America who works your hours and is directed by you. Starting all-in rates for the roles Toptal also covers:
Shortlist in 48 hours. Start in 72 hours. You get a shortlist of 3 to 5 vetted candidates within 48 hours of your first call, and your hire can start in 72 hours. The vetting funnel: 100% apply, 22% clear the recruiter screen, 9% pass cognitive (IQ), skills and English testing, 3% reach a live interview, 1% are hired, which is what we mean by the top 1%.
After the hire, your account manager is the main point of contact and coordinates onboarding, the start date, tools access and a first-week plan, then follows up during the first weeks. You direct the day-to-day work. Virtustant handles payroll, paperwork and everything administrative on the professional's side. Terms are month-to-month with zero placement fees, a lifetime replacement guarantee and one weekly invoice per placement. How Virtustant makes money: if you pay your agent $10/hr, we give them $9 and keep the dollar in the middle. Virtustant is rated 4.9/5 on G2 and 4.5/5 on Trustpilot.
On cost against a US hire: the BLS 2025 hourly pay for market research analysts and marketing specialists is $37.87. Thirty percent of $37.87 is $11.36, and the $7 starting rate sits below it, which is why you can save up to 70% at the starting rate. Senior and specialist roles are quoted above the floor.

Toptal charges a $79 monthly subscription once you proceed with talent matching, plus the talent's rate, which it quotes per engagement and does not publish. Each engagement starts with a trial of up to two weeks in which you are not billed if you are not satisfied. At an example rate of $100 an hour, a full-time month of 160 hours costs $16,079 including the subscription.
No. Toptal's FAQ and Why Toptal pages describe the subscription, the trial and billing terms, but not talent rates. Toptal says you work with talent hourly, part-time or full-time for a fixed price on a weekly basis, and the rate is quoted for each engagement.
It is a flat monthly fee Toptal charges if you decide to proceed with talent matching. You can cancel at any time, and if Toptal cannot provide talent you can request a refund on cancellation. On a full-time engagement at $50 an hour or more, it is under 1% of the monthly bill.
Toptal's FAQ does not mention a deposit. Several third-party guides report a refundable $500 deposit credited to the first invoice, so ask whether one applies when you get your quote.
Toptal says it typically invoices clients twice a month on Net 10 terms and accepts major credit cards, ACH, bank wires and PayPal. If talent is unavailable, billed time is credited back.
It depends on the quote. Using the BLS median wage for software developers ($135,980, May 2025) plus benefits at 30% of compensation, a fully loaded US developer costs about $16,188 a month. A full-time Toptal developer costs the same at about $100.68 an hour, which we call the Toptal Parity Rate. Below that rate Toptal costs less per month; above it, more.
Toptal's FAQ answers "For the most part, yes," with terms arranged case by case. If conversion is likely, ask for the conversion terms in writing before the engagement starts.
For an ongoing seat in US hours, a remote staffing agency usually costs less. Through Virtustant, developers and designers start at $8 an hour all-in and marketing specialists at $7, with zero placement fees, month-to-month terms and a lifetime replacement guarantee. You get a shortlist of 3 to 5 vetted candidates within 48 hours of your first call, and your hire can start in 72 hours.
