How Much Does It Cost to Hire a Software Developer in 2026? What 47 Searches Show

Hiring a software developer in 2026 costs anywhere from about $8 an hour to well over $60 an hour, depending on the route. In the US, the Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual wage for software developers at $135,980 (BLS, May 2025), before benefits, payroll taxes and recruiting. Across 9 full-time developer searches with a stated budget in Virtustant's own recruitment system, companies budgeted a median of $2,598 a month, about $16.24 an hour.
Two findings in that data change how you should budget. 20 of 47 developer searches were platform work (Shopify, WordPress, Wix, GoHighLevel and automation tools), not software engineering. And 19 of 47 job descriptions named AI tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot or the OpenAI API, including half of the code-first roles.
Every Virtustant figure on this page comes from first-party recruitment data pulled 30 September 2026 and described in full under Method. Where a figure is not ours, it is the one the source publishes, with its date.
The question has three honest answers, because the three ways to hire a developer price different things. A salary buys a person and leaves the overhead to you. A marketplace rate buys hours. A remote staffing agency rate buys a dedicated person with the overhead already inside the number.
| Route | What you pay | What the price covers | Fits when |
|---|---|---|---|
| US in-house hire | $135,980 median annual wage for software developers; $64.44/hr median for software developers, QA analysts and testers (BLS, May 2025) | Wages only. Benefits, payroll taxes, equipment and recruiting come on top | You need someone in-region and the budget to match |
| Freelance marketplace | $20/hr median, most rates between $10 and $100 (Upwork, read 30 September 2026) | Billed hours; vetting, management and continuity are on you | A short, well-defined project with a clear end |
| Remote staffing agency (Virtustant) | From $8/hr all-in, zero placement fees, month to month | One dedicated developer on your schedule, with sourcing, vetting, contract, payroll, compliance and a lifetime replacement guarantee with no time cap | Ongoing product or platform work that needs daily overlap |
Against a comparable US in-house hire, once payroll, benefits and overhead are counted, a managed remote placement can save up to 70%. The exact rate for a developer depends on the stack and seniority, so Virtustant scopes it on the discovery call rather than publishing a single number for every developer role. See the software developer role page for profiles.
Most cost guides quote a range and stop. What a company actually commits to is a monthly budget for a seat, and clients state it when they open a search, so that is the number we can report.
Original data — 47 developer searches, October 2025 to September 2026. Full-time searches with a stated monthly budget: 9. Median budget $2,598 a month. Middle half $2,250 to $4,330. Range of budget midpoints $1,360 to $4,333. Implied hourly at 160 billed hours: about $16.24. Deduplicated searches in Virtustant's recruitment system, covering hired, open, on-hold, declined and ghosted roles.
One caution before reading further: only 9 of the 32 full-time searches carry a stated budget; most older records do not have the budget field filled. Treat the budget figures as indicative and read the patterns across all 47 searches as the stronger signal.
The 9 budgets do not spread evenly. They fall into two groups, and what separates them is the kind of system the developer owns, not the language they write.
| Band | Searches | Budget midpoints | What the roles had in common |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feature development | 6 | $1,360 to $3,120 a month | A general developer, a junior-to-mid React developer, an AI system developer, an Odoo developer, a senior backend developer and a software developer. Build and maintain features inside an existing product |
| System ownership | 3 | $4,330 to $4,333 a month | A senior software engineer, a founding data platform engineer and an AI integration developer. Own a system end to end: architecture, data pipelines or the integration layer |
The practical read: before you benchmark a rate, decide whether you are hiring someone to build inside your product or someone to own a system. That decision moves the budget more than any other.
Of the 47 developer searches, 24 were code-first roles: full stack, backend, iOS, Salesforce, data and DevOps. 20 were platform work, fully or in part: Shopify theme and store development, WordPress and WooCommerce, Wix, GoHighLevel and automation tools like Zapier, Make and n8n. The remaining 3 did not state enough to classify.
| Kind of search | Searches | Typical tools | Screen for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Code-first | 24 | React, Next.js, TypeScript, Node.js, Python, Swift, Apex | Code quality, code review, architecture decisions |
| Mixed: platform plus custom code | 11 | Shopify Liquid, WordPress with PHP, WooCommerce, Zapier plus scripts | Platform depth plus enough code to extend it |
| Platform or low-code | 9 | WordPress page builders, Wix, GoHighLevel, CRM integrations | Platform experience and the business workflow |
| Not enough detail | 3 | — | — |
This matters for cost because a platform builder and a software engineer are different hires. If most of the work is a Shopify store or a WordPress site, a Shopify specialist or a WordPress specialist is the better fit, and so is a GoHighLevel specialist for CRM and funnel builds. Paying for a software engineer to edit a theme is the most common way to overspend on this hire.
19 of the 47 job descriptions named AI tools or LLMs: Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, the OpenAI API, MCP servers or agent frameworks. Among the 24 code-first roles, it was 12, half of them. Among the 9 platform and low-code roles, it was 1.
Two kinds of request sit inside that number. Some companies want a developer who builds with AI coding assistants to ship faster. Others want a developer who builds AI into the product: LLM integrations, agents and automations. The second kind showed up in the top budget band; the first kind showed up everywhere.
If AI-assisted work matters to you, test it the way the work will happen: give the candidate a real task, let them use the tools they would use on the job, and review both the result and how they checked it.
Whichever route you take, the rate is only part of what a developer costs you. The rest is where most budgets slip:
If you are weighing how agencies charge for all this, how much staffing agencies charge breaks down the fee models, and choosing a software developer recruitment agency covers what to ask a provider.
Virtustant places vetted developers from Latin America, with a first shortlist of 3 to 5 candidates in 48 hours. Candidates come from roughly the top 1% of applicants through a four-stage vetting funnel: 100% apply, 22% clear the recruiter screen, 9% pass skills and English testing, 3% reach a live interview, 1% are hired. See the Latin America software developer page for profiles, or book a discovery call to scope the role and leave with a rate and a timeline whether or not you hire. If you are also comparing regions, hiring offshore developers covers the time zone tradeoff, and hiring Python developers covers one stack in depth.
In the US, the BLS median annual wage for software developers was $135,980 in May 2025, before benefits, payroll taxes and recruiting. Freelancers on Upwork list a median of $20 an hour. Across 9 full-time developer searches with a stated budget in Virtustant's recruitment system, the median monthly budget was $2,598, about $16.24 an hour at 160 billed hours. Through Virtustant, developer rates start at $8 an hour all-in with zero placement fees.
It depends on the route. The BLS median for software developers, quality assurance analysts and testers was $64.44 an hour in May 2025, as wages alone. Upwork reports a median of $20 an hour for software developers on its marketplace, with most rates between $10 and $100. A dedicated remote developer through Virtustant starts at $8 an hour all-in, and the exact rate is scoped to the role on the discovery call.
Companies that opened full-time developer searches with Virtustant budgeted a median of $2,598 a month, with the middle half between $2,250 and $4,330. Roles that own a whole system, such as a senior software engineer or a data platform engineer, sat at the top of that range. Virtustant's developer rates start at $8 an hour all-in, covering payroll in the professional's country, compliance and a lifetime replacement guarantee.
Per hour, a marketplace freelancer can look cheaper, but the price covers only the hours billed. A dedicated remote developer works your schedule inside your tools, and through a remote staffing agency the rate also covers sourcing, vetting, payroll, compliance and replacement. Freelancers fit short, well-defined projects; a dedicated developer fits ongoing product work.
In our intake data, three searches were budgeted at the top: a senior software engineer, a founding data platform engineer and an AI integration developer, each at a budget midpoint of about $4,330 a month. The other six, including a senior backend developer at $2,598, sat between $1,360 and $3,120. Owning a whole system moved the budget more than seniority or programming language did.
Ask whether the person will write code that ships to your customers or configure a platform you already pay for, such as Shopify, WordPress or GoHighLevel. In our data, 20 of 47 developer searches were platform work, fully or in part. Platform builders are screened on the platform; software engineers are screened on code, code review and architecture.
Of 47 developer searches in our data, 32 were full-time. Product and engineering work benefits from continuity and daily overlap, so most companies buy a full seat. Part-time was more common for platform work: 11 of the 15 part-time searches were platform or mixed roles.
Through Virtustant, a first shortlist of 3 to 5 vetted candidates arrives within 48 hours of an approved job description. Across 468 placements in the 12 months to 23 September 2026, the average from opening a search to the professional's start date was 11.2 days.
The dataset. 47 software developer searches in Virtustant's recruitment system, opened between October 2025 and September 2026, after removing internal test records and collapsing duplicates that shared a job description, keeping the most recent record. Covers hired (31), open, on-hold, declined and ghosted searches, because a stated budget is a demand signal whether or not the search closed. Budget figures use the midpoint of the monthly client budget stated at intake and include only full-time searches with a stated monthly budget (9). The kind of work, AI mentions, hours and time zone were read from the job title, schedule and job description.
What this is not. These are client budgets, not rates paid and not salaries. The budget sample is small and each band rests on three to six searches. Treat the bands as indicative.
Third-party figures. US wages: BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, Software Developers, Quality Assurance Analysts, and Testers, May 2025 (software developers median annual wage $135,980; group median $64.44 an hour). Marketplace rates: the median and range Upwork publishes on its software developer cost page, read 30 September 2026.
Virtustant published figures. Developer rates from $8/hr all-in, zero placement fees, first shortlist within 48 hours, average of 11.2 days from opening a search to start date (468 placements, 12 months to 23 September 2026), four-stage vetting funnel of 100/22/9/3/1, lifetime replacement guarantee with no time cap.
