  • A dedicated development team works only on your product, long-term, under your direction; you can get one from a vendor, a remote staffing agency, freelancers or in-house hiring.
  • One full-time developer: about $16,188.10 a month loaded in the US, $6,000 to $11,000 from a Latin American dedicated-team vendor, from $1,280 through Virtustant.
  • Vendor bill rates can include a 35% to 50% markup, and a vendor project manager adds $2,000 to $5,000 a month.
  • In 45 developer roles our clients filled, 33 did not share a job post with another hire and only 3 of 37 descriptions joined an existing engineering team.
  • 32 of 45 roles were tied to a US time zone, and 15 of 37 asked for AI or LLM skills.

Key Takeaways

A dedicated development team is a group of developers who work only on your product, full-time and long-term, under your direction. You can get one four ways: from a software vendor that supplies the team and often a project manager, by placing dedicated developers into your own team through a remote staffing agency, by assembling freelancers, or by hiring in-house. On published 2026 rates, one full-time developer costs about $16,188.10 a month loaded in the US, $6,000 to $11,000 a month from a Latin American dedicated-team vendor, and from $1,280 a month through Virtustant, where developers start at $8 an hour all-in.

This guide compares the four models on who manages the work and what each publishes, prices a three-developer team under each, and shows what 45 software roles that clients filled through Virtustant actually looked like. Third-party rates are the ones each source publishes, read on 16 October 2026.

What a Dedicated Development Team Is (and Is Not)

A dedicated team is defined by three things: the developers work only on your product, they stay for months or years rather than for one project, and you set their priorities. That separates it from the two models it is often confused with.

Dedicated teamFixed-price projectFreelancers
What you buyOngoing capacity: a set of named developersA defined deliverable for a set priceHours or tasks from individuals
Who sets prioritiesYou, every sprintThe scope documentYou, task by task
How longMonths to yearsUntil the scope is deliveredAs long as each person is available
BillingMonthly per developerMilestonesHourly or per task
Best fitA product that keeps changingA one-off build with a clear specShort, specialized work

If your roadmap changes every month, a fixed price fights you; if you only need one feature built, a dedicated team is more capacity than you need.

Four Ways to Hire a Dedicated Development Team

The models differ less on the developers than on who recruits, who manages the daily work and who replaces someone who leaves.

ModelWho recruitsWho manages daily workWho replaces a developerHow it bills
Dedicated-team vendor (software company)The vendorThe vendor's project manager, or youThe vendorMonthly bill rate per developer, plus a PM if you use theirs
Dedicated developers through a remote staffing agencyThe agencyYou (your CTO, lead or product manager)The agencyHourly or monthly rate per developer, all-in
Assembled freelancers (Upwork, Arc and similar)You, from profilesYouYouHourly, plus marketplace fees
In-house hiresYou or a recruiterYouYouSalary, benefits, payroll tax and equipment

A vendor sells a managed unit and charges for the management. A staffing agency sells the people and leaves the management with you, which is cheaper if you already have someone who can run the work. For a deeper comparison of the two, see outsourcing vs staff augmentation and our guide to staff augmentation.

What a Dedicated Developer Costs: Published 2026 Rates

Monthly figures use 160 hours, the same basis for every row. They are arithmetic on published rates, not quotes.

SourcePublished ratePer developer, 160 hours a month
US in-house software developerBLS median $65.38 an hour, $135,980 a year (May 2025), plus benefits at 30.0% of compensation$16,188.10 loaded
Dedicated-team vendors, North America (nCube, indicative)$100 to $175 an hour; $16,000 to $28,000 a month$16,000 to $28,000
Dedicated-team vendors, Latin America (nCube, indicative)$35 to $65 an hour; $6,000 to $11,000 a month. Mid-level $30 to $50, senior $55 to $80 an hour$6,000 to $11,000 (mid-level $4,800 to $8,000)
Vietnam-based dedicated-team vendor (Saigon Technology, own rate)$22 to $46 an hour by role and seniority$3,520 to $7,360
Upwork freelancersWeb and mobile development $30 to $120+ an hour; DevOps $60 to $120+$4,800 to $19,200+ before fees
Arc freelancers$15 to $110+ an hour; full-time hires carry a fee of 20% of annual salary$2,400 to $17,600+
VirtustantDevelopers from $8 an hour all-in; rate scoped by stack and seniorityFrom $1,280

Three details change the bill. nCube notes that a vendor bill rate usually carries a markup of 35% to 50% over base cost, that a monthly retainer can lower the effective rate by 15% to 25%, and that a vendor project manager costs $2,000 to $5,000 a month. It also advises adding 20% to 30% to any quote for onboarding, tooling and coordination. Ask every vendor which of those are inside the quoted rate. For role-by-role figures, see our software developer cost guide.

Pricing a Three-Developer Team

A common first dedicated team is three developers. Here is what three full-time seats cost per month on the published figures above.

ModelBasisThree developers, per month
US in-houseBLS median, loaded with benefits$48,564.30
Latin American dedicated-team vendornCube indicative mid-level rate, three developers$14,400 to $24,000
Same, with the vendor's project managerPlus $2,000 to $5,000 a month$16,400 to $29,000
Vietnam-based dedicated-team vendorSaigon Technology $22 to $46 an hour$10,560 to $22,080
Dedicated developers through VirtustantFrom $8 an hour all-in, three developersFrom $3,840

The US row is wage plus benefits only, before payroll tax, recruiting, equipment and software. Against a comparable US team, dedicated remote developers can save up to 70% once payroll, benefits and overhead are counted. The bigger choice in this table is not the rate; it is whether you pay for management. If you have a CTO or lead developer, the vendor's project manager duplicates them. If you do not, that line is what keeps the team pointed at the right work.

What 45 Developer Hires Looked Like

Vendor guides often describe a dedicated team as a full squad with a project manager, QA and DevOps. To check what buyers actually hire, we read the job posts behind the 45 software and engineering positions that clients filled through Virtustant, created in our recruitment system between October 2025 and August 2026. 44 had a usable post, covering 37 distinct job descriptions.

Original data — 45 filled developer positions, 37 distinct job descriptions. Role mix: WordPress, Shopify, web or no-code developers 17, full-stack 9, AI and automation 5, back-end 3, mobile 3, QA 3, front-end 2, data 1, ERP or CRM developer 1, tech lead 1. Schedule: 29 full-time, 16 part-time (8 at 20 hours a week). Hours: 32 of 45 tied to a US time zone (21 Eastern, 9 Pacific, 2 Central). Stack named (of 37 descriptions): JavaScript or TypeScript 17, AI or LLM APIs or AI coding tools 15, React 9, WordPress 9, Shopify 9, PHP or Laravel 6, Git or GitHub 6, Node 5, SQL 5, Zapier, Make or n8n 4, Python 3, AWS 3. Team context: joins an existing developer team 3, works with a product or project manager 5, mentions Agile, Jira or Git 8. Shared posts: 12 of 45 positions shared a job post with another filled position, in 5 groups (two groups of 3: a full-stack and a QA post). English: 37 of the 38 posts that set a level asked for C1 or higher. Virtustant first-party data, read 16 October 2026.

Four findings for anyone planning a dedicated team:

  • Teams are built one seat at a time. 33 of the 45 positions did not share a job post with any other filled position. The three-developer hires that did happen were one full-stack post and one QA post, each filled three times.
  • The buyer usually manages the work. Only 3 of 37 descriptions said the developer would join an existing engineering team, and 5 mentioned a product or project manager. The rest named neither, which points to a buyer who directs the work directly.
  • Agencies and software companies are the main buyers. 30 of 44 roles were at agencies or software companies adding delivery capacity, not at companies building their first product.
  • AI skills are now a default ask. 15 of 37 descriptions named AI or LLM APIs or AI coding tools, close to the 17 that named JavaScript or TypeScript.

See our guide to hiring AI developers for what those roles actually involved.

The "Who Runs the Sprint" Test

Before choosing a model, answer five questions. Three or more answers on one side point to the model.

QuestionPoints to a vendor-managed teamPoints to dedicated developers you manage
Do you have a CTO, lead developer or product manager?NoYes
Do you need QA, DevOps and design from day one?Yes, all of themNot yet; one or two developers first
Will priorities change every week? No, the roadmap is setYes, you want to steer daily
Do you need hours that overlap yours? Not criticalYes, same business hours
Is the budget per developer the main constraint? No, management is worth paying forYes

In our data, 32 of 45 roles were tied to a US time zone and only 5 of 37 descriptions mentioned a product or project manager. That is the profile of the right-hand column: a buyer who runs the sprint and wants developers working the same hours.

How to Hire a Dedicated Development Team in Five Steps

  1. Write the first two seats, not the whole org chart. Name the stack, the work for the first 90 days and who the developers report to.
  2. Pick the model with the sprint test above, then ask each provider the same questions: what is inside the rate, who replaces a developer, and how fast.
  3. Test on real work. A paid task in your codebase or a live pairing session beats a generic coding test.
  4. Set the overlap. Agree the exact US hours the developers are online and the meetings they attend.
  5. Add seats only after the first ones ship. Add QA when release volume needs it, and DevOps when infrastructure does.

Hiring Dedicated Developers Through Virtustant

Virtustant is a remote staffing agency that places vetted, bilingual developers and other remote professionals from Latin America with US businesses. Frequently Asked Questions

What is a dedicated development team?

A group of developers who work only on your product, full-time and long-term, with priorities set by you. You can get one from a software vendor, by placing dedicated developers through a remote staffing agency, by assembling freelancers, or by hiring in-house.

How much does a dedicated development team cost?

On published 2026 rates, one full-time developer costs about $16,188.10 a month loaded in the US, $6,000 to $11,000 a month from a Latin American dedicated-team vendor (nCube, indicative), $3,520 to $7,360 from a Vietnam vendor (Saigon Technology), and from $1,280 a month through Virtustant. Three developers range from $3,840 to about $48,564.30 a month across those models.

What is the difference between a dedicated team and staff augmentation?

With a vendor dedicated team, the vendor supplies and often manages the team, and bills for that management. With staff augmentation, you add individual developers to your own team and manage them yourself. Some providers call both a dedicated team, so ask who runs the daily work.

Do I need a project manager for a dedicated development team?

Only if no one on your side can set priorities and review the work. nCube puts a vendor project manager at $2,000 to $5,000 a month. In 37 developer job descriptions behind roles filled through Virtustant, only 3 mentioned joining an existing engineering team and 5 a product or project manager.

How big should a dedicated development team be?

Start with the smallest team that can ship: often one or two developers. In our data, 33 of 45 filled developer positions did not share a job post with another filled position, so most teams grew one seat at a time.

Where can I hire a dedicated development team in Latin America?

Through a dedicated-team vendor with Latin American staff, or through a remote staffing agency that places developers into your team. Virtustant places developers from 18 Latin American countries, from $8 an hour all-in, working US hours; 32 of 45 roles we filled were tied to a US time zone.

How fast can I hire dedicated developers?

Through Virtustant, you get a shortlist of 3 to 5 vetted candidates within 48 hours of your first call, and your hire can start in 72 hours.

Method and Sources

Published rates. Read on 16 October 2026: nCube, dedicated software development team pricing article (published 6 August 2026, modified 10 September 2026), whose regional and role rates are labeled indicative 2026 bill rates; Saigon Technology, dedicated team pricing page ($22 to $46 an hour, presented as its own rate, undated); Upwork, software developer cost page (rates by specialization, undated); Arc pricing page (freelance $15 to $110+ an hour, full-time fee 20% of annual salary). Monthly figures multiply hourly rates by 160. Prices change: confirm them before you buy.

Wages and benefits. BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025, software developers (SOC 15-1252): median $65.38 an hour, $135,980 a year. Benefits are 30.0% of total compensation in private industry (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026); the loaded figure divides the annual wage by 0.70 and by 12.

Virtustant data. Software and engineering positions in Virtustant's recruitment system marked filled, created 8 October 2025 to 17 August 2026: 45 filled, 44 with a usable post and 37 distinct descriptions; read on 16 October 2026. Test records and non-developer roles were excluded. Our tool returns post excerpts and caps search results, so stack and team counts are lower bounds and a few positions may be missing. Shared posts may include replacements as well as simultaneous hires. Subgroups are small. These are job requirements, not rates or salaries.

Virtustant published figures. Developers from $8/hr all-in, zero placement fees, shortlist within 48 hours, start in 72 hours, four-stage vetting funnel of 100/22/9/3/1, lifetime replacement guarantee with no time cap, month-to-month terms.
