Key Takeaways

Social media management services are outside providers that run your social accounts for a monthly fee: planning the calendar, creating posts and short videos, publishing, answering comments and messages, and reporting results. Agencies publish prices from $750 to $7,000 a month (LYFE Marketing, September 2026), and in a 2026 survey of almost 100 agencies, 49% charged $1,000 to $2,499 a month and 31% under $1,000 (HeyOrca, October 2026). Productized packages start at $99 a month for 10 posts on one set of accounts (Feedbird), and freelance social media managers on Upwork list $14 to $35 an hour. Through Virtustant, a dedicated remote social media manager from Latin America starts at $8 an hour all-in; the median client-side rate for a Virtustant social media manager in H1 2026 was $12.00/hr (n=31), about $1,040 a month at 20 hours a week.

This guide breaks down what a package actually includes, compares the five ways to buy the work, gives a test for unbundling a quote line by line, and reports what 13 recent social media searches and 34 social media placements through Virtustant show, including how many of those searches came from agencies that sell social media management themselves. Third-party prices are as published, read on 27 October 2026.

What a Social Media Management Service Includes

Every package is a bundle of the same seven jobs. Providers differ in which ones they include, how many units of each you get, and which ones they bill as add-ons.

Line itemWhat it coversHow often it is in the package
StrategyGoals, audience, content pillars, channel mix, monthly planUsually a kickoff plus a monthly or quarterly review; depth varies widely
Content creationGraphics, carousels, captions, copy from a briefThe core of most packages, sold by posts per month
Short-form videoReels, TikToks and Shorts edited from your footageOften a separate tier or add-on (Feedbird sells 5 videos from $149 a month)
PublishingCalendar, approvals, scheduling across channelsIncluded almost everywhere
Community managementReplies to comments and DMs, escalating leads and complaints75% of agencies in the HeyOrca survey include it in packages
Paid socialMeta, TikTok or LinkedIn ad campaigns and budgetsOnly 18% of agencies in the same survey include it; usually a separate fee
ReportingReach, engagement, follower growth, traffic and leadsMonthly report in most packages

The two lines that move a quote the most are video and paid social. Ask for them priced separately, because a package that looks cheap often covers static posts and publishing only.

Five Ways to Buy Social Media Management

Productized packageFrom $99 a month for 10 posts; Pro tier $1,500 a month (Feedbird plans)A fixed number of posts or videos per month on a set calendarA pooled production teamSimple, steady posting where one set of accounts is enough

Agency retainer, small business$500 to $2,000 a month for one or two platforms (Eclincher pricing guide); 49% of surveyed agencies charge $1,000 to $2,499 (HeyOrca agency pricing survey)Strategy, content and publishing, often community managementAn account manager plus a shared creative teamBusinesses with no one in-house to direct social
Full-service agency$2,000 to $5,000 a month mid-market; $5,000 to $20,000+ enterprise (Eclincher pricing guide)Strategy, creative, video, paid social, analyticsA multi-person teamMulti-channel programs with paid media and production
Dedicated remote social media managerFrom $8 an hour all-in through Virtustant; $1,040 a month at 20 hours a week at the $12.00 H1 2026 medianOne person in your tools and your time zone, on your accounts onlyYour hire, directed by youOngoing posting, video and community work you want in-house

The models are not ranked. They buy different things: a package buys units of content, an agency buys a team and its judgment, and a dedicated hire buys a person's hours and attention on one brand.

Two things stand out. First, the agency market clusters at $1,000 to $2,499 a month, which is a part-time person's budget. Second, only 18% of agencies in the HeyOrca survey include paid social, so a retainer and an ad management fee are usually two separate bills. Eclincher's guide also advises at least $2,500 a month of ad budget per network before paid social is worth running.

The Package Unbundling Test

A social media package is priced as one number, but you are buying seven line items in different quantities. Unbundle the quote before you compare it with anything else.

  1. Write the weekly need for each line item. Posts per week by channel, videos per week, the hours a day someone should answer comments and DMs, whether you run ads, and how often you need a report.
  2. Ask every provider to price the same list. Posts and videos per month, response window, ad management fee, and what counts as a revision. If a line is not in the package, ask its add-on price.
  3. Convert to a unit price. Divide the monthly fee by what it delivers. Feedbird's published plans come to $9.90 a post ($99 ÷ 10) and $29.80 a short video ($149 ÷ 5). For a retainer, ask how many hours of work it covers; most agencies can tell you.
  4. Convert the same budget into hours. A $1,000 to $2,499 retainer, the band 49% of surveyed agencies charge, equals 83 to 208 hours a month of a dedicated social media manager at the $12.00 H1 2026 median, or 19 to 48 hours a week.
  5. Price what is left over. Strategy, paid social and production you cannot do in-house are what an agency fee should be paying for. If the quote is mostly posting and replies, you are paying team rates for execution.

The Package Unbundling Test, in one line. Divide any social media quote by the posts, videos and response hours it delivers. If most of it is publishing and replies, the same monthly budget buys a dedicated person for 19 to 48 hours a week at the $12.00 median, working only on your brand; if most of it is strategy, paid media and production, the agency is selling what a single hire cannot. The Ownership Line

Whoever runs your social media ends up holding assets that are hard to move later. Before you sign with anyone, agree in writing that these stay in your company's name, with the provider on user-level access:

  • The accounts themselves. Your business is the admin of every profile, page and channel. The provider is added as a user, never the only admin.
  • The ad accounts and pixel. Meta Business Portfolio, ad accounts, pixels and conversion events belong to you, and so does the payment method.
  • The content library. Raw footage, edited files, templates and the brand kit live in your drive, not the provider's.
  • The scheduling tool. The workspace in Later, Buffer, Hootsuite, Publer or Meta Business Suite is yours, so the calendar and history stay when the provider changes.
  • The reporting history. Monthly reports and the analytics behind them are exported to you every month.
  • The exit terms. Notice period, handover of logins and files, and what happens to scheduled posts.

A dedicated hire works inside your accounts by default, so the Ownership Line is the starting point rather than a clause to negotiate. With an agency or package, it is the clause most worth reading twice.

What 13 Searches and 34 Placements Show

Original data — 13 social media searches clients opened through Virtustant from 28 September to 23 October 2026, and 34 social media positions filled from October 2025 to October 2026. Of the 13 searches, 4 came from marketing agencies, and 3 of those said in the posting that their business is running social media for other brands. 8 of 13 asked for video editing (7 as a duty, 1 as a preferred skill), 4 wrote strategy into the duties, and 1 included running ad campaigns; another said paid ads were handled by a separate specialist. 9 of 13 started part-time, at 10 to 20 hours a week. Of the 34 filled positions, 22 of the 24 with a recorded schedule were part-time, 20 worked Eastern hours and 7 Pacific, and 10 had a title that combined social media with video, design, content creation, web or admin work. Virtustant first-party data, read 27 October 2026.

  • Agencies buy the same person you can hire. A company that manages social media for US consumer product brands opened a full-time search for a coordinator to own the calendar, publish across channels, keep the content library and report weekly and monthly across several brands. Two other companies whose business is managing social accounts for brands filled social media manager seats the same month, one part-time and one full-time. Many social media management services are delivered by remote professionals like the ones a business can hire directly.
  • Video is half the job. A commercial painting and construction company hired a manager to turn job-site footage into Reels, Shorts and before-and-after transformations, design carousels and run the newsletter. A real estate company hired one to script, edit and post its videos.
  • Buyers purchase slices. A web design firm hired a manager for 10 hours a week to post on Facebook and LinkedIn and keep its Google Business profile current. A land-planning company hired one for 20 hours a week to build Instagram and TikTok from zero with AI tools, without micro-management.
  • Paid is usually a separate seat. Only 1 of 13 searches put ad campaigns in the duties, which matches the agency side: 18% of surveyed agencies include paid social in a package.
  • Multi-account work is common. One client's manager runs three Instagram accounts, a fourth just added, and six Facebook groups.

What a Dedicated Social Media Manager Costs

Weekly hoursMonthly hoursAt the $8 starting rateAt the $12.00 H1 2026 median
1043.3$347$520
2086.7$693$1,040
40173.3$1,387$2,080

Monthly cost is weekly hours × 52 ÷ 12 × the hourly rate, with no setup fee and no placement fee. The $12.00 figure is the median client-side rate for a Virtustant social media manager in H1 2026 (31 placements), a benchmark, not a quote; your quote depends on scope, experience and schedule. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics has no "social media manager" occupation; its closest one, market research analysts and marketing specialists, had a median wage of $37.87 an hour in May 2025 (BLS OEWS, SOC 13-1161), before payroll taxes and benefits. The $8 starting rate is below 30% of that wage alone, which is why you can save up to 70% against a comparable US hire.

For the salary side of the decision, our social media manager cost breakdown compares six salary sources and the covered-hour test. To scope the seat itself, see the social media manager role.

When an Agency Is the Right Call

  • You need a team, not a person. Strategy, design, video production, paid media and analytics at once is what a full-service retainer buys.
  • Paid social is the main channel. If most of the budget is ads, buy campaign management from specialists and keep organic posting separate. Our guide to PPC management services covers how ad management is priced.
  • Production is the bottleneck. Shoots, creators and high-volume video are often project work; see video editing services.
  • No one can direct the work. A dedicated hire needs an owner who approves the plan and gives feedback weekly. Without one, an agency's account manager fills that role.
  • The need is short. A launch or a three-month campaign fits a package or a project better than a hire.

Many businesses combine both: an agency or specialist for paid media and production, and a dedicated person for daily posting, replies and reporting. For marketing roles beyond social, see our guide to choosing a marketing staffing agency.

How to Compare Quotes

  • Same scope, every provider. Channels, posts and videos per week, response window, ads yes or no, reporting cadence.
  • Units per month. Posts, videos, revisions and response hours in writing, not "full management".
  • Who does the work. A named person or a pooled team, and how many other accounts they handle.
  • Time zone. When comments and DMs get answered in your customers' hours.
  • Ad fees. Flat fee or a share of spend, and whether ad creative is extra.
  • The Ownership Line. Accounts, ad accounts, files and the scheduling tool in your name.
  • Exit. Contract length, notice period and handover.
  • A paid test. One week of posts from the same brief, compared side by side.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are social media management services?

Social media management services are outside providers that run a company's social accounts for a monthly fee: planning the calendar, creating posts and short videos, publishing, answering comments and messages, and reporting results. They are sold as productized packages, freelance work, agency retainers or full-service agency programs, and the same work can be done by a dedicated remote hire.

How much do social media management services cost?

Agencies publish prices from $750 to $7,000 a month (LYFE Marketing, 2026). In HeyOrca's 2026 survey of almost 100 agencies, 49% charged $1,000 to $2,499 a month and 31% under $1,000. Productized packages start at $99 a month for 10 posts, freelancers on Upwork list $14 to $35 an hour, and a dedicated social media manager through Virtustant starts at $8 an hour all-in.

What is included in a social media management package?

Most packages bundle strategy, content creation, publishing and reporting. Community management is included by 75% of agencies in HeyOrca's 2026 survey, while paid social is included by only 18%, so ad management is usually a separate fee. Short-form video is often a separate tier or add-on.

Is it cheaper to hire a social media manager or an agency?

It depends on what the package delivers. A $1,000 to $2,499 monthly retainer, the most common agency band, equals 19 to 48 hours a week of a dedicated social media manager at the $12.00 median client-side rate Virtustant reported for H1 2026. If the quote is mostly posting and replies, a dedicated person usually covers more hours; if it is strategy, paid media and production, the agency is buying a team.

How much do agencies charge for social media ad management?

Eclincher's 2026 guide puts paid social management at 10% to 20% of ad spend or a flat $500 to $2,000+ a month, and advises at least $2,500 a month of ad budget per network. Feedbird lists Meta ads management at $499 a month.

Who should own my social media accounts when I use a provider?

Your business should be the admin of every profile, ad account and pixel, with the provider on user-level access. Keep the content library, brand kit, scheduling tool workspace and reporting history in your company's name, and agree on handover terms before you sign.

How fast can I hire a dedicated social media manager?

Through Virtustant, you get a shortlist of 3 to 5 vetted candidates within 48 hours of your first call, and your hire can start in 72 hours. Give finalists the same brief as a paid test and compare a week of posts.

Calculations. Unit prices: $99 ÷ 10 posts = $9.90; $149 ÷ 5 videos = $29.80. Retainer in hours: $1,000 ÷ $12.00 ≈ 83 hours a month (19 a week); $2,499 ÷ $12.00 ≈ 208 hours a month (48 a week); weeks = hours ÷ (52 ÷ 12). Dedicated cost: weekly hours × 52 ÷ 12 × rate. BLS: 30% of $37.87 = $11.36, above the $8 starting rate.

Virtustant data. Searches: the 13 client positions with social media in the title opened from 28 September to 23 October 2026 in Virtustant's recruitment system, excluding Virtustant's own evergreen open application; a duty, tool or platform counts only where the posting text names it, and the 24 earlier searches coded in our social media VA guide are not included. Placements: 34 positions with social media in the title marked filled, created from 9 October 2025 to 1 October 2026; schedules and time zones are reported only where the record states one. No rates, budgets or salaries from these records are published. The H1 2026 median is a published Virtustant figure from the 2026 rate report.
