  • Amazon agencies publish retainers of $1,500 to $25,000+ a month, revenue shares of 3% to 10% and PPC fees of 10% to 20% of ad spend (SupplyKick, 2026).
  • Outsourced ecommerce support is quoted at $0.75 to $7 a ticket or $10 to $19 an hour per agent in Latin America; a dedicated rep through Virtustant starts from $7/hr.
  • The Fee-Scaling Test: a 5% revenue share costs more than a full-time dedicated specialist at $8/hr ($1,280) above $25,600 a month in Amazon sales.
  • Fulfillment belongs with a 3PL; on-screen execution such as listings, returns and catalog work fits a dedicated hire.
  • In 25 e-commerce hires through Virtustant, 12 were marketplace roles and 9 Shopify roles; 14 of 17 with a schedule were full-time.

Key Takeaways

Ecommerce outsourcing means handing a store function to an outside provider: fulfillment to a 3PL, customer service to a support vendor, marketplace management to an Amazon agency, or store work to a developer, and the way each one is priced matters more than the headline rate. Amazon agencies publish retainers of $1,500 to $25,000+ a month, revenue shares of 3% to 10% of Amazon sales and PPC fees of 10% to 20% of ad spend (SupplyKick, 2026). Outsourced ecommerce support is quoted at $0.75 to $7 a ticket or $10 to $19 an hour per agent in Latin America (Ringly, 2026). Through Virtustant, a dedicated remote e-commerce virtual assistant or support rep starts from $7 an hour all-in, and a Shopify developer from $8: $1,120 to $1,280 a month full-time.

This guide maps what you can outsource and how each function is priced, gives a test for fees that grow with your sales, and reports what 25 e-commerce positions US companies filled through Virtustant actually asked for. Third-party prices are as published, read on 26 October 2026.

Most growing stores end up with a mix: a 3PL for boxes, and people for everything that happens on a screen. The question for each screen function is whether you buy it as a service priced against your sales, or as a person priced against hours.

The Fee-Scaling Test

Agency and vendor fees in ecommerce are usually tied to something that grows: your revenue, your ad spend or your ticket count. A dedicated person is tied to hours. Run three checks before you sign:

  1. Find the line that scales. If the fee is a share of revenue or ad spend, work out what it costs at next year's sales, not this month's.
  2. Find the crossover. A full-time dedicated specialist at the $8 rate costs $1,280 a month. A 5% revenue share costs the same at $25,600 a month in Amazon sales, a 3% share at about $42,700, and a 10% share at $12,800. A 15% PPC fee matches it at about $8,500 a month in ad spend.
  3. Split strategy from execution. Listings, catalog fixes, inventory sync, cases, returns and reports are execution and fit a dedicated hire. Channel strategy, category expertise and creative production are where an agency's team earns its fee.

The Fee-Scaling Test, in one line. Above about $25,000 a month in Amazon sales, a 5% revenue share costs more than a full-time dedicated marketplace specialist at the $8 starting rate, every month, and the gap grows with your sales. Below that, or when you need a team's strategy, the agency fee is easier to justify. Arithmetic on published prices, read 26 October 2026.

What 25 E-commerce Hires Show

Original data — 25 e-commerce positions US companies filled through Virtustant, October 2025 to October 2026. By function: 12 marketplace roles (Amazon, Walmart and marketplace managers, PPC, listings and purchasing), 9 Shopify roles (6 developers, 2 specialists, 1 designer), 2 support and order roles and 2 e-commerce generalists. Of the 17 with a recorded schedule, 14 were full-time. In the 8 job posts behind placements that we reread, Shopify was named in 6, listings, catalog or product data in 4, Amazon in 3, Walmart in 2, and 3 came from agencies hiring to serve their own clients' stores. Virtustant first-party data, read 26 October 2026.

  • E-commerce seats are full-time. Fourteen of 17 with a schedule were full-time, mostly on Pacific and Eastern hours. Store operations do not pause, and a seat covers the whole day's queue.
  • One person often runs several channels. A supplements brand selling mainly on Amazon, plus Walmart and Shopify, hired one e-commerce specialist to manage listings across all three, clean up the catalog, write SOPs and keep inventory in sync with its Texas warehouse.
  • Agencies staff the same way. An Amazon advertising agency hired a senior PPC specialist to run 10 to 20 client accounts, and Shopify store builders hired a developer and a senior Shopify specialist to build and maintain stores for consumer brands.
  • Support starts with a backlog. A buyer that had just acquired a men's e-commerce brand hired a support specialist to clear the ticket backlog left by the ownership change, then run returns, exchanges and refunds in Gorgias, Shopify and Loop.
  • Roles are getting wider. A wellness brand selling on Shopify and TikTok Shop hired one growth operator to own SEO, AI search visibility, outbound to retail buyers and product data across two stores.

That is the Fee-Scaling Test in practice: these companies bought execution as hours, and kept the work, the accounts and the know-how in-house.

When an Agency or Vendor Is the Right Call

  • Fulfillment. Warehousing, picking and shipping belong with a 3PL.
  • 24/7 support at volume. Round-the-clock coverage across languages and peaks is what support vendors are built for; one dedicated rep is not 24/7 coverage.
  • Category strategy you do not have. An agency that runs many brands in your category brings benchmarks and playbooks a single hire cannot.
  • Creative production. Photography, A+ content, brand stores and video are often project work.
  • No one to direct the work. A dedicated hire needs an owner who sets weekly priorities.

Many stores combine both: a 3PL and an agency for strategy or creative, and dedicated people for daily execution. If your store runs on automations as much as on people, our guide to AI automation services covers how to buy that work; for the support side, see customer service outsourcing.

What to Put in the Brief

  • Channels. Shopify, Amazon Seller Central or Vendor Central, Walmart, TikTok Shop, wholesale portals.
  • The daily queue. Tickets, returns, listing updates, cases, purchase orders and reports, with rough weekly volume.
  • Your stack. Help desk, returns app, inventory or ERP system, ad tools such as Helium 10 or Pacvue.
  • Hours and coverage. Which US time zone, and what happens on weekends and peak days.
  • Decision rights. Refund limits, price changes, ad budget changes: what the hire can approve alone.
  • Account ownership. Seller accounts, ad accounts and the help desk stay in your company's name, with user-level access.
  • A test task. Give finalists the same messy listing or real ticket thread and compare the result.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ecommerce outsourcing?

Ecommerce outsourcing means handing a store function to an outside provider: fulfillment to a 3PL, customer service to a support vendor, marketplace management to an Amazon agency, or store development to a Shopify developer. Many stores combine outside services with dedicated remote professionals who run daily execution.

How much does ecommerce outsourcing cost?

It depends on the function. Amazon agencies publish retainers of $1,500 to $25,000+ a month, revenue shares of 3% to 10% and PPC fees of 10% to 20% of ad spend. Outsourced ecommerce support is quoted at $0.75 to $7 a ticket or $10 to $19 an hour per agent in Latin America. A dedicated e-commerce VA through Virtustant starts from $7 an hour all-in.

How much does Amazon account management cost?

SupplyKick's 2026 guide puts Amazon agency retainers at $1,500 to $3,000 a month for brands under $250,000 a year and $3,000 to $7,500 for brands at $250,000 to $2 million, with revenue shares of 3% to 10% and PPC fees of 10% to 20% of ad spend. Setup fees run $1,000 to $5,000.

Should I outsource ecommerce customer service?

Outsource to a support vendor when you need 24/7 coverage across languages or seasonal peaks. Hire a dedicated rep when one person can cover your hours and you want the same person handling tickets, returns, refunds and order edits in your help desk. At published per-ticket prices, a full-time rep at $7 an hour costs the same as 160 to about 1,493 tickets a month.

When does an Amazon agency cost more than a dedicated hire?

A full-time dedicated marketplace specialist at $8 an hour costs $1,280 a month. A 5% revenue share costs the same at $25,600 a month in Amazon sales, and a 3% share at about $42,700. Above those levels the agency fee is higher every month, so it should be buying strategy and team breadth, not only execution.

What e-commerce roles do companies hire remotely?

Of 25 e-commerce positions US companies filled through Virtustant from October 2025 to October 2026, 12 were marketplace roles such as Amazon account managers, PPC and listings, 9 were Shopify developers, specialists or designers, and 4 were support or generalist roles. Fourteen of the 17 with a recorded schedule were full-time.

How fast can I hire a remote e-commerce specialist?

Through Virtustant, you get a shortlist of 3 to 5 vetted candidates within 48 hours of your first call, and your hire can start in 72 hours. Give finalists the same real listing or ticket thread as a test task.

Calculations. Dedicated hire = $7 or $8 × 160 hours. Revenue-share crossover = $1,280 ÷ share: $1,280 ÷ 0.05 = $25,600; ÷ 0.03 ≈ $42,667; ÷ 0.10 = $12,800. PPC crossover = $1,280 ÷ 0.15 ≈ $8,533 in ad spend. Ticket crossover = $1,120 ÷ $7 = 160 tickets; $1,120 ÷ $0.75 ≈ 1,493 tickets.

Virtustant data. 25 positions with e-commerce, Shopify, Amazon, Walmart, marketplace or order-entry terms in the title marked filled in Virtustant's recruitment system with creation dates from 8 October 2025 to 13 October 2026, a lower bound: support reps and VAs serving online stores under general titles are not counted.
