IT Staffing Services (2026): Published Fees and Markups, Costs by Role, and What 40 Technical Hires Asked For

IT staffing services place technical people in your business on four models: contract staffing, contract-to-hire, direct hire and remote staffing. On published 2026 figures, agencies mark up IT contract pay rates by 35% to 50% (a range of about 30% to 75%), convert contractors to staff for 10% to 25% of first-year salary, and charge 15% to 30% for a direct hire. On a US systems administrator at the BLS median of $47.66 an hour, a 35% to 50% markup bills $64.34 to $71.49 an hour. A remote staffing agency such as Virtustant bills one all-in hourly rate instead, from $8 an hour for technical roles, with no placement fee.
This guide compares the four models on what each charges, prices common IT roles under each, and shows what 40 technical (non-developer) roles that businesses filled through Virtustant actually asked for. Third-party figures are the ones each source publishes, read on 19 October 2026.
IT staffing agencies, IT staffing companies and tech staffing agencies sell the same four arrangements. They differ in who employs the person, how the agency earns its money and what it costs to keep someone long term.
| Model | How the agency is paid | Who the person works for | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Contract (temporary) staffing | A markup on the contractor's hourly pay rate, for as long as they work | The agency | Projects, cover for leave, short-term surges |
| Contract-to-hire | The contract markup, then a conversion fee if you hire the person | The agency, then you | Testing someone on real work before a permanent offer |
| Direct hire (permanent placement) | A one-time fee, a percentage of first-year salary | You, from day one | Senior or in-office roles you will keep for years |
| Remote staffing agency | One all-in hourly rate, no placement fee | The agency handles pay and compliance; you direct the work | Ongoing remote roles at full-time or part-time hours |
A fifth option is not staffing at all: a managed IT services provider (MSP) runs your help desk, devices and network for a monthly fee, and you never manage the technician. It is the right call when the problem is coverage of infrastructure rather than a person on your team. For staffing fees across all roles, see our guide to how much staffing agencies charge.
| Fee | Published figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| IT contract markup | Usually 35% to 50% on the pay rate; about 30% to 75% depending on role and market | KORE1 IT staffing pricing guide (updated 29 July 2026) |
| Contract markup, all roles | About 25% to 75% (KORE1); about 25% to 40%, up to 75% for hard-to-fill roles (Upwork) | KORE1; Upwork staffing fees article |
| Contract-to-hire conversion | 10% to 25% of projected first-year salary | KORE1 |
| Direct-hire fee | 15% to 30% of first-year salary: entry level 15% to 18%, mid level 20% to 22%, senior 25% to 30% | KORE1 |
| Direct-hire fee, all roles | About 18% to 25% of first-year compensation | Upwork staffing fees article |
| Remote staffing agency (Virtustant) | All-in hourly rate, from $8 an hour for developers, automation, QA and DevOps roles; no placement fee | Virtustant role pages |
The markup is the number to ask about first. It is charged on every hour, so on a long contract it costs more than a one-time placement fee: a 40% markup on a $47.66 pay rate adds $19.06 to every hour, about $3,050 a month at full time. The second thing to ask is what the markup covers, because payroll taxes, insurance and the agency's margin all sit inside it.
These figures apply the published markups and fees above to BLS median wages (May 2025) at 160 hours a month. They are arithmetic, not quotes; real pay rates vary by city and seniority.
| Role (BLS median wage) | Contract bill rate at a 35% to 50% markup | Per month, 160 hours | Direct-hire fee at the published level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Computer support specialist ($30.24 an hour, $62,890 a year) | $40.82 to $45.36 an hour | $6,531.84 to $7,257.60 | $9,433.50 to $11,320.20 (entry level, 15% to 18%) |
| Network and computer systems administrator ($47.66 an hour, $99,130 a year) | $64.34 to $71.49 an hour | $10,294.56 to $11,438.40 | $19,826 to $21,808.60 (mid level, 20% to 22%) |
| Software developer ($65.38 an hour, $135,980 a year) | $88.26 to $98.07 an hour | $14,122.08 to $15,691.20 | $27,196 to $29,915.60 (mid level, 20% to 22%) |
| Remote technical professional through Virtustant | From $8 an hour all-in | From $1,280 | $0 |
A direct hire also carries salary, benefits and payroll tax after the fee, so the fee is the entry cost, not the total. Against a comparable US hire, a remote technical professional can save up to 70% once payroll, benefits and overhead are counted. Role-by-role figures for developers are in our software developer cost guide.
"IT staffing" suggests help desk and servers. To see what businesses actually hire, we read the job posts behind the 40 technical positions outside software development that clients filled through Virtustant, created in our recruitment system between October 2025 and October 2026. 37 of the 40 have a readable post, covering 31 distinct job posts.

Before calling an agency, sort the work into one of three piles. The pile decides the model.
| If most of the work is | Examples | Usually the best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Tickets | Password resets, laptops, onboarding devices, network outages, patching | A managed IT services provider, or an IT support hire on-site or on call |
| Workflows | Connecting CRM, forms, billing and email; automations; dashboards; CRM administration | A dedicated remote automation or systems specialist, often part-time |
| Code | Building or changing your product, integrations that need custom code | Developers on contract or through a remote staffing agency |
In our data, most technical hires land in the middle pile: 26 of 31 posts named automations and integrations. The systems already exist; what is missing is someone who makes them work together every week.
Virtustant is a remote staffing agency that places vetted, bilingual automation specialists, QA engineers, data analysts, DevOps engineers, developers and other remote professionals from Latin America with US businesses. Technical roles start at $8/hr all-in, with zero placement fees, month-to-month terms and a lifetime replacement guarantee with no time cap. You get a shortlist of 3 to 5 vetted candidates within 48 hours of your first call, and your hire can start in 72 hours, on your hours and in your tools. Candidates come from the top 1% of applicants through a four-stage vetting funnel: 100% apply, 22% clear the recruiter screen, 9% pass cognitive (IQ), skills and English testing, 3% reach a live interview, 1% are hired. See the AI automation specialist, IT support specialist and QA engineer role pages, pricing, or book a discovery call to scope the role.
Agencies that place technical people in your business on contract, contract-to-hire, direct-hire or remote staffing terms. They source and screen candidates and, on contract terms, employ the person and bill you an hourly rate that includes a markup.
On published 2026 figures, IT contract markups usually run 35% to 50% of the pay rate (about 30% to 75% overall), contract-to-hire conversion fees 10% to 25% of first-year salary, and direct-hire fees 15% to 30% of first-year salary depending on level. Remote staffing agencies such as Virtustant bill one all-in hourly rate with no placement fee.
Applying a 35% to 50% markup to BLS median wages (May 2025) gives about $40.82 to $45.36 an hour for a computer support specialist, $64.34 to $71.49 for a systems administrator and $88.26 to $98.07 for a software developer. Through Virtustant, technical roles start at $8 an hour all-in.
For a short project, contract is cheaper because you pay no placement fee. For a long engagement, the markup on every hour usually costs more than a one-time direct-hire fee. A remote staffing agency avoids both by billing one all-in rate.
In 40 technical roles outside software development filled through Virtustant, 22 were automation specialists working in tools such as Zapier, Make and n8n, 5 were CRM or ERP administrators and 4 were QA. Only 2 were IT support or help-desk roles.
Not usually for small-business roles. None of the 57 technical job posts Virtustant received in the past year required a CompTIA, CCNA, Microsoft or AWS certification; the posts asked for named tools and an English level instead.
Through Virtustant, you get a shortlist of 3 to 5 vetted candidates within 48 hours of your first call, and your hire can start in 72 hours.

Wages. BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025 medians: computer support specialists $62,890 a year, $30.24 an hour; network and computer systems administrators $99,130 a year, $47.66 an hour; software developers $135,980 a year, $65.38 an hour. Monthly figures use 160 hours. Wages exclude benefits and payroll tax.
Virtustant data. Technical positions outside software development (automation, CRM and ERP administration, QA, data, IT support, systems, IT project management, security) in Virtustant's recruitment system, created 8 October 2025 to 16 October 2026: 70 received, 40 filled, 31 distinct posts behind 37 of the filled positions; read on 19 October 2026. Search limits mean a few positions may be missing, and post excerpts are truncated, so tool and duty counts are lower bounds. Subgroups are small. These are job requirements, not rates or salaries.
Virtustant published figures. Technical roles from $8/hr all-in, zero placement fees, shortlist within 48 hours, start in 72 hours, four-stage vetting funnel of 100/22/9/3/1, lifetime replacement guarantee with no time cap, month-to-month terms.
